Mathew Short

Overview

Mathew was called to the Bar in 2022. Prior to that, he practised as a solicitor from 2013 to 2022.

He accepts briefs in all areas of law, with a focus on civil and commercial disputes, equity, estates litigation, insurance and professional negligence litigation, intentional torts, admiralty and maritime law, asset confiscation litigation, inquests and commissions of inquiry.

Mathew appears both led and unled in all NSW and Federal Courts and other inquiries and tribunals. This has included matters ranging from large scale litigation in the Supreme Court of New South Wales involving 35 Defendants to urgent interlocutory applications for freezing and other orders. Mathew has also been briefed in large scale inquiries, including the Special Commission of Inquiry into LGBTIQ hate crimes and the Inquiry into the convictions of the Croatian Six.

Prior to being called to the Bar, Mathew was a Principal Litigation Solicitor and Team Leader at the Australian Federal Police where he worked primarily in asset confiscation litigation involving tracing, property and trusts in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and courts in the ACT, Victoria and South Australia. Prior to that, he practised in insurance litigation at TurksLegal in Sydney.

Mathew graduated with Honours with a combined Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce (Economics) with Distinction from the University of Wollongong, receiving a place on the Dean’s Merit List for both Laws and Commerce.

Mathew is a keen sailor, having competed in numerous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races and other offshore races and regattas around Australia and South East Asia.
