Lizzie McLaughlin

Lizzy B&WLizzie was admitted as a solicitor in 2004 and called to the Bar in 2014.

Lizzie appears as counsel in a wide range of criminal and civil matters across NSW and interstate including trials, appeals, hearings, coronial inquests, tribunal proceedings, inquiries and commissions.

Lizzie has a particular interest in inquests, commissions and inquiries and has appeared in the Special Commission of Inquiry into matters relating to the investigation of certain child sexual abuse allegations in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory.

Lizzie graduated from the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons Class 1) in 2002. On graduation Lizzie worked as Associate to Justice Heydon AC in the High Court of Australia before commencing her career as a solicitor with the Aboriginal Legal Service (ACT/NSW) and Legal Aid (ACT). Before being called to the Bar, Lizzie was a Senior Associate with Burke & Mead Lawyers (Newcastle) and became an Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law with the NSW Law Society.

Lizzie was a research intern at the Australian Institute of Criminology in 2006 and tutored law students in Criminal Law and Evidence at the Australian National University for a number of years while practicing as a solicitor.

Lizzie is currently a member of the NSW Bar Association’s Criminal Law Committee and NSW Women’s Lawyers.
